Southwind Frank Adds Wellwood Memorial To Collection
Sep 19

Southwind Frank ran his record to eight-for-nine with seven straight wins thanks to a 1:55.4 tally in the $373,000 William Wellwood Memorial for 2-year-old male trotters on Saturday night's card at Mohawk Racetrack.

Driven by Yannick Gingras, Southwind Frank was up to get the lead away from early tempo-setter Brooklyn Hill (Dave Miller) just past the 28 second opening quarter. Southwind Frank would then get to the half in :57.1 while facing no outside pressure.

Elimination winner Deep Impact (Steve Condren) tried it first-over out of the fourth position just past the half, but by the time the field raced into the turn he was already back to the cones. That left Marion Marauder (Scott Zeron) first-over until Tony Soprano (John Campbell) pulled to the outside just before Southwind Frank hit three-quarters in 1:25.4.

Southwind Frank had built up a comfortable cushion on his foes as they raced into the stretch, and although Marion Marauder cut into his advantage in the final sixteenth, Southwind Frank remained clear to win by a length and a quarter. It was a tight finish for the remainder of the positions with Deep Impact just getting up over Brooklyn Hill and Tony Soprano.

"He's raced good that way," said Gingras about putting Southwind Frank on the lead. "There was not that much speed out of the gate, so I figured I'd take control of the race and let him do this thing.

"Just keep him out of trouble, that's basically the thing. I knew I had the best horse in the race, and my job was just to keep him out of trouble and get him to the wire."
