Maritimer Pulls A Shocker In First Governor's Plate Elim
Jul 8

22-1 shot Maritimer rallied after a second-over trip to stun his rivals in the first $5,000 Governor's Plate elimination Sunday at Red Shores Summerside.

Public choice Firethorn (John MacDonald) was in the lead through fractions of :27, :57.2, and 1:25.4, but Maritimer (Ken Arsenault), who had tracked the cover of Aled Hanover (Alex Sobey), paced a :29.4 final quarter to get up for the win by a neck in 1:56. Firethorn had to settle for second and Carnivore (John Holmes) collected third.

William Turner trains Maritimer, a four-year-old son of Full Scholarship, for owner Barbara Pearl. Maritimer has four wins from 13 starts this year, and he has 15 career victories. He has earned $5,624 in 2012 and $50,350 in his life.
