Rebounding from an uncharacteristic break, Sir Caviar held off a fierce challenge by Sharp Edge and captured Mondayís $22,500 Preferred Handicap Trot at The Meadows.
Sir Caviarís poor performance last week followed a sickness scratch, but the six-year-old SJs Caviar - Sierra Flower K gelding appeared his old self Monday, particularly when confronted by the first-over Sharp Edge. He dug in for Brian Zendt and downed Sharp Edge by a neck in 1:53.2, a tick off his own track record. Tough Call was fourth-placed-third after the disqualification of Break The Bank K for running in the lane.
Leslie Zendt trains Sir Caviar, who now boasts $417,769 in career earnings, and owns with Bill Zendt. It was one of three wins on the 16 race card for Brian Zendt.
With his four victories, Dave Palone lifted his career win total to 15,147 as he pursues Herve Filionís North American record of 15,180.
