Last November the Harrisburg Sale was a buzz when the full brother to Somebeachsomewhere sold for $430,000.
There will be no opportunity for a similar occurrence this fall though. Breeder Stephanie Smith-Rothaug of Ohio sold the Major In Art half-brother to Australian Robert Watson and Martinez Equine of Pennsylvania in a private transaction last fall. No price was disclosed.
"Ernie saw the colt and just kept after us about him. I'm biased but I do think he was another special kind of horse," explains Smith-Rothaug.
"Finally, it was such a good offer we had to take it. As a breeder there are bills to pay and there is always the potential for something to happen to a horse. I was always taught to strike while the iron is hot and it was.
"I'm sorry not to have him our consignment for the fall but maybe with the Ontario situation it was the best move we could have made."
This past spring the dam Wheres The Beach left another full brother to Somebeachsomewhere and the mare has been bred to Rocknroll Hanover. Smith-Rothaug has four yearlings to sell this fall in Lexington, Harrisburg and Ohio.
