Buck I St Pat Pockets Breeders Crown Mares Trot Aug 22
Buck I St Pat added a Breeders Crown to her impressive list of accomplishments thanks to a stakes record 1:52 effort in the $250,000 event for open trotting mares on Saturday night at the Meadowlands Racetrack.
Buck I St Pat (Tim Tetrick) got away in fourth from post two, and had a good view of a front-end battle between Falls For You (Brian Sears) and Classic Lane (Mike Lachance) as those two mares raced bridle-to-bridle to the 27.4 opening quarter and the 55.1 half-mile marker.
Falls For You and Classic Lane continued their battle around the far turn and over to the 1:24.1 three-quarter mile marker. In behind the dueling leaders, Maid For Tag (Olav Mikkelborg) pulled the pocket to follow Classic Lane, which allowed Armbro Flight Stakes champion Lavec Dream (Yannick Gingras) to slide into the pocket spot, and it also put Buck I St Pat in the third-over position.
At the top of the stretch, Tetrick pulled Buck I St Pat off cover, and she exploded right by the winded leaders. Lavec Dream, who also got out at the head of the stretch, tried her best to chase down Buck I St Pat, but Buck I St Pat just kept going on her way to a three length victory. Spice Queen (John Campbell) finished back in the third position.
"She's such a special mare; she's so tough and so versatile," Tetrick said. "She's had some bad luck, but we got her Breeders Crown. It worked out for me, last week when she was locked in, she exploded. She can absolutely fly off someone's back. She's just amazing."
Ron Burke handles the training of Buck I St Pat, a six-year old Jailhouse Jesse-Name It Something mare, for co-owner/breeder Ronald Fuller and co-owners Howard Taylor, Edwin Gold, and Abraham Basen. Buck I St Pat scored her sixth victory in 12 attempts on the campaign and her 37th career win. She has now banked $237,625 in 2009 and $1,254,600 in her time on the track.
"It took her a little bit of time (to get back in top form after the Elitlopp), but a lot of it was things that were out of her control," Burke noted. "It meant a lot for us, it's our first Breeders Crown and hers too.
"We believe she's the best mare when she's good, but this is the first time we've been able to put it together the right night."
"She's never been sound when this race has came up," Taylor added. "It's been our goal, and it was frustrating. The trip (to Sweden) was rough on her, it took its toll. Today she proved herself.
"Hopefully we're going to go to Delaware (Ohio) and set a world record, and if she stays together we're going to bring her back. It's too much fun to watch her race."
