The Just For The Boys Claiming Series was the highlight of the Tuesday afternoon card at Kawartha Downs with four divisions of the first round of the event going behind the gate.
In the first split, the victory went to driver Bradley Rae and Alba Emerson. Rae guided the ten-year old son of Armbro Emerson first-up on the far turn, and put away the leader, Takeittothehouse, and then held off the late charge of Cousin Carl and driver Steve Skilton by a quarter of a length in 1:57. Randy Zhok of Innisfil, Ontario, owns and conditions the winner.
In the second division, Son Of The King and driver Gord Brown got their pictures taken. Brown worked out a second-over trip for the ten-year old son of Kingsbridge, and they came home fastest of all to take the win in 1:57. Mark Winacott trains Son Of The King for owner Paul Sarginson of Trenton, Ontario.
Four Starz Ebee and trainer/driver Fred Brethour took home the top prize in the next division. Brethour followed in the pocket before finding room in the stretch for the son of Grinfromeartoear, and he was able to hold off a big late challenge from Binatural and driver Aaron Byron to win by a quarter of a length in 1:56.1. Brethour also co-owns the five-year old gelding with partner David Misner.
The final split went to Denim Jeans and trainer/driver John Thomson. Thomson put the son of Intrepid Seelster on the front end right from the get-go, and had things their own way until deep stretch when Scandia Quick and driver Warren Hie put a late scare into them. Denim Jeans was up to the task, however, and held on for the head victory. James Allen of Tillsonburg, Ontario, holds the ownership papers on Denim Jeans.
