The lightning-fast one mile oval at the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield was the site of eight $4,500 State Fair Stakes eliminations for two-year-olds of both sexes and gaits on Friday afternoon.
Winning the two eliminations for the colt and gelding pacers were Sleazy Mr E (Sagebrush-Da Sleazy One) by three-parts of a length in 1:56.1 for driver John De Long, trainer Paul Stafford and owner-breeder Engel Stables LLC and Boi (Sportsmaster-Rachel Hanover) by two lengths in 1:54 for driver Dave Magee, trainer Dirk Simpson, and owner-breeder Peter Karras.
Visiting the winner's circle following the pair of eliminations for the freshman pacing fillies were Pardon (Richess Hanover-Rose Dawson) by half a length in 1:54 for Magee, Simpson, and owner-breeder Richard Balog and Fox Valley Touche (Sportsmaster-Thongundrcolrsoops) by a length and a quarter in 1:54.2 for driver Dale Hiteman, trainer Joel Smith, and owners Paula Smith and James Runyan. Fox Valley Touche was bred by Fox Valley Stanardbreds.
Emerging victorious in the couple of eliminations for the trotting colts and geldings were Big Brown (Vaporize-Fox Valley Go Girl) by a nose in 2:00.3 for driver Mike Oosting, trainer Erin Elliott and owner Tom Lambropoulos and Powerful Charger (Powerful Emotion-Fox Valley Poetry) by two and three-quarter lengths in 1:55.4 for driver Todd Warren, trainer/co-owner Pamela Coleman, and co-owners Mystical Marker Farms LLC and Jerry Graham. Big Brown was bred by Fox Valley Standardbreds and Robert Buddig while Powerful Emotion was bred by Jerry Graham and J.D. Graham.
Scoring wins in the two eliminations for the filly trotters were My Miss Caroline (Psychic Spirit-Miss Clara T) by 12 and a half lengths in 1:57.2 for co-owner/trainer Robert Taylor and co-owners La Bella Vita Stables and Kevin Dixon and My Funky Farkle (Banderas Hall-Fannie Farkle) by two and a half lengths in 1:58.4 for driver Todd Warren, trainer/co-owner/breeder James Murphy, and co-owner/breeder Donna Murphy. My Miss Caroline was bred by Joe Springfield.
