There definitely will be no San Pail at the Nat Ray next week at the Meadowlands.
Trainer and co-owner Rod Hughes made the announcement that he and partner Glenn Van Camp have decided to remain in Ontario instead.
"It's a decision I know will lead to some criticism because of the money involved but we felt that the best thing for the horse was to rest him here for three weeks and then see what else is available. It was a big decision on our part and the Meadowlands people did their best to get us to think otherwise but this is our plan," he offered.
"As I said before we're thinking long term with him. We've been careful whereas maybe some of the others have tried to dance every dance which may be part of the reason we won the Maple Leaf Trot. Whose to say that we wouldn't get into a sickness problem in New Jersey like Arch Madness did when he came up to Mohawk? Anyway, this is what we're going to do."
Hughes also suggested that they may consider making a trip to The Red Mile in October for the Allerage Trot.
San Pail sits with earnings of $551,500 this season.
